  • Q: What’s the difference between a concrete/ shotcrete pool and a vinyl pool?
A: A concrete pool is a special type of concrete which is sprayed with compressed air onto a rebar steel cage which is backed by formwork. This is a very durable pool investment. The finish of a concrete pool is a coating of plaster which can come in a variety of colours with a ceramic tile band at the water line. A vinyl pool consists of galvanized vertical steel walls which in turn have a vinyl liner draped off them. At Alka Pool we build concrete inground pools because we know they last.

  • Q: How long does it take to build a concrete pool?
A: Depending on each site, it would be wise to allow 8 weeks minimum for the pool. However, timing will depend upon many things such as; permits, city and engineering requirements and whether the pool is in conjunction with other things, like a new home construction or other landscaping.

  • Q: How much does a concrete pool cost?
A: Each Alka pool construction is custom and therefore, it is difficult to give accurate numbers. The best way to determine a Budget is to establish a size, depth and shape of pool, describe the type of site especially for excavation access, which Municipality you’re planning to build in, and patio preferences then give us a call. Our sales staff will be able to give you a budget number, or if you are ready we can make an appointment to review your poolscape needs in detail.

  • Q: What should I look for in a builder?
A: Look for a builder that has years experience in the type of pool construction you desire. The builder you ultimately chose should bring you the latest in available products, building techniques and services and should be an active member of associations which promote good ethics, quality, safety and continuing education. At Alka Pools we have over 45 years experience in building concrete pools, whirlpools and water features. We have been a leader in bringing the latest Innovations the pool industry has to offer.

  • Q: Why do associations matter?
A: A good builder is always looking for ways to improve, being a member of a Guild or associations that promotes high standards, ethics and continual education is a primary way to stay on top of the latest innovations and services. Seek out member builders of associations which promote these values and elects members into their guild or association through a screening process. Alka is proud to be a member of the Master Pools Guild as well as the NPC, the APSP, and Pool and Hot Tub Council of Canada. See the Links section for further information on these associations.

  • Q: How do I maintain my pool?
A: As a final step of construction we ‘turn over the keys’ with a walk through and thorough review of your pool, any special features, equipment, safety, chemical balance, maintenance, and provide you with operating manuals. We want to make sure you are confident with the operation of your new pool.

  • Q: What is a better sanitization system; ozone or salt water chlorine generator?
A: Both are excellent systems, each will create a clean, sanitary, healthy environment to swim in when calibrated properly. There are a number of factors that customers use to choose between the two. At Alka, we will help you make an informed decision by answering your questions and understanding your preferences.

  • Q: Can I integrate my automatic pool cover switch with my house smart system?
A: No. For safety reasons the automatic pool cover must be opened and closed within site of the pool. Integrating the switch with the house smart system would allow someone to inadvertently close the cover while there are swimmers in the pool. This becomes dangerous. We at Alka Pool will review these critical safety items with each customer.
